Immediately I felt that there was something different about Ebby. It was not only that he was sober. I could not put my finger on what it was. I offered him a drink and he refused. Then I asked him, "What's this all about? You say you aren't drinking. But you also say you aren't on the water wagon, either. What's up?" Well said Ebby, " I've got religion."

Our basic troubles are the same as everyone else's, but when an honest effort is made "to practice these principles in all our affairs," Well- grounded A.A.'s seem to have the ability, by God's grace, to take these troubles in stride and turn them into demonstrations of faith. We have seen A.A.'s suffer lingering and fatal illness with little complaint, and often in good cheer. Reprinted with permission AA World Services 12X12 pg.114

Walking up Clinton Street to the subway, I fished six cents out of my pocket. A nickel would get me to the hospital. But hadn't I forgotten something? Here I was on my way to be cured. Typical alcoholic that I was, I figured that I might as well be comfortable until the hospital took over. So I stepped into a grocery store where I had a slim credit. I remember explaining to the clerk that I was an alcoholic on my way to be cured. Could I have four bottles of beer on the cuff? AA Comes of Age pg. 62
