The View From Inside The Archives By Rusty R.
1st Quarter 2005
After the 4th Quarter assembly I asked myself this question "is Area 64 spending to much on keeping the archives open?" I have thought about this a lot during my quite time. What can we do as the Archives committee? What can we do as Area 64? I have tried to see this from as many sides as possible. I have talked to some people in the program. I want to share with you my thoughts and my memories of how we came to have an archives building, and what options we have for the future. I was a voting member of the assembly the day we voted to have an archive's building. The motion passed on a voice vote. I don't remember any no's or a voice of the minority. So on 9/1/98 the archives building opened. I have seen our collection grow, because there was a place for our history to be seen and kept safe.
Do we have other options for our collection? We do and here is what I see as those options. 1. We can do away with our collection completely. Sell the valuable items to the highest bidder. 2. We can reduce the size of the collection to where it will fit under the alternate delegate's bed. 3. We can rent storage space. 4. We can find a place with cheaper rent. 5. We can continue as we are. 6. We can grow our collection, working hard to have as much of the Tennessee A.A. history as possible. What would you chose? Do you see other possibilities? What does it take to make each one of these work? I could tell you how I think we could do any one of these options and the problems with doing each one. I am only going to tell you how we can reach the options that I am choosing to work for.
I choose to work to grow our collection, saving as much of the Tennessee A.A. history as possible. All we need to do to reach this goal is three things. 1. Give to our home group that extra dollar or five dollars make sure that your home group gives to area 64 or at the very least to the Area 64 Archives 2. Do some service work with archives committee. 3. Be your own personal archivist, saving your "precious memories" and make sure that they finally reach Area 64 Archives. Help me to save our history.
